Origiful Shoulder Bag or Handbag

In perusing eBay for that coveted bargain or "snipe", I have come across many handmade bags and totes put up for auction or sale. As a tentative, very much amateur and self-taught handbag "designer" I couldn't help but take a closer look at the skill level of the various handbags offered for sale. Needless to say as with anything, there were varying levels of success. One of the variety of bags on eBay are the "booty bags" made from jeans. Below is one of the better handmade bags from seller trendy nana and mama on eBay

Which brings me to topic. This Orgiful.com video shows artist Ian Padgham constructing bags or sacks from pants and then hand painting them.

A professional artist, Padgham decided to use the bags as a way to show his art. So whether amateur home seamstress / crafter or professional artist or trained, career high-end fashion designer / couturier or just pop fashion enthusiast, we can find in us somewhere an interest in design and style no matter how rustic or sublime.

The website, UnsungDesigners.com is one of many sites that showcases the talent of emerging designers. In a fashion forward mode I always like to promote the talented and yet to be discovered by the world at large. Ashlee Simpson has been exercising her fashion chops lately and what can I say,…  here she arguably has a success as she attends the Us Magazine Hot Hollywood Party. Not only is the outfit spot-on but her face and body language express a grace and elegance associated with couture fashion or high fashion. The gray is understated, the accessories simple and I love that the candy apple red shoes just make the whole outfit pop. Fashion’s Next Transition

I came across an interesting article at www.smh.com.au that asked whether or not fashion as we know is dead. In the past when looks appeared on the runway six months in advance they were not so accessible. Now with the internet and television coverage the looks show up in the local malls before the designers' lines go into production. And more so, many new and popular looks come from pop culture – movies, videos etc.

Are designers running out of ideas? Increasingly there are revivals of revivals. The 60's inspired looks current this season are an example. There was a surge in 1960's the look in the early 90's. The articles says that emerging and independent designers will most likely keep high fashion aloft.

I agree that fashion is becoming more diverse and fuzzy, but I believe there are just more participants to share the spotlight. Ultra-luxe clients will still purchase as part of their niche group if marketed to effectively. Quality, both in construction and design will be a wise survival tactic for any brand.

Premium denim,  pop-fashion brands such as Seven For All Mankind and Diesel have loyal customers because of the quality of the product and because the cut of that particular brand fits their particular body shape. Indeed those labels that depend on having as its customer base those who mindlessly follow a trend because it is "in at the moment" or to emulate some celebritiy's lifestyle may be in jeopardy. I look at seeing a particular celeb wearing an outfit I like in a way similar to seeing someone walking by me on the street who is dressed in an interesting look. It is just an inspiration to adapt a style that I may feel would suit me personally. We have our original ideas for dress and often we may borrow a hint of a look from a stylish friend. From a popular blog's catchphrase – Style For All !

Kate Moss’ Fashion Line: A Sketchy Start?

Some news outlets are claiming that the Kate Moss clothing line sold at TopShop in the UK is far from the runaway success hoped for, indicated by sales that went for below retail on eBay. From personal experience, I can tell you that eBay is very much a shoppers paradise and very often a hit-and-miss proposition for sellers. The laws of supply and demand prevailed as 3,500 items from the Kate Moss inspired line were placed for auction. It isn't clear if the eBay sellers were by individuals seeking a profit making opportunity or people from TopShop themselves. The clothing line largely consists of dresses tees and jeans and is meant to be a "walk into Moss' wardrobe".

The long and short of it: Best sellers in London and Paris. Good reviews in London and tepid reviews in New York. And on eBay, well.. furious sells and then a lull. The quality of the design and construction of the clothes will be the best indicator for the long run. Kate Moss certainly adds publicity and hype. But all labels need marketing (see my many upcoming posts on emerging designers!), but at the end of the day it is all about quality to determine if this line has staying power. Gwen Stefani's label L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers is an example of this.

Octopi : An Emerging Indie Design Team

I  will be posting emerging and independent designers often on this blog because I like to maybe familiarize those who may be unaware of a designer whose work they may really find suits them.  Sarah Welsh and Madeline Davy, Rhode Island School of Design graduates, are two designers to be showcased at Gen Art NYC . They launched their careers creating one-of-a-kind pieces in Brooklyn in 2003. Their label, Octopi is named for the animal in its ability to transform its color, texture and shape. The clothing line is available from New York to LA and their designs and where to buy can be seen at their website octopinyc.com.

Britney Spears’ fashion wild side…?

Britney Spears has been opting for the edgy side of fashion lately. And when I saw her in this latest outfit, I had to say "what was she thinking?!!" The man’s hat, the red bra or bikini top underneath the see-through shift? The cowboy boots? Ripped fishnets?

But then I had to think again! Gwen Stefani has made poular the "Harajaku girls"  style of Japan to Westerners.  And Madonna pioneered her own original look in the 80′s – and pulled it off. Hordes of teens and young women dressed like her.  But Britney Spears is not pulling off this eclectic, who-cares-anyway look. Since erstwhile pal Madonna may not be available, perhaps Gwen Stefani and her Harajaku dancers can give her a few pointers on getting the feel of the look she is going for.

Girls and young women known for their street style named for the Harajuku district of  Tokyo, Japan who wear the "Gothic Lolita" or Gothloli style of fashion. Other sub-styles are Second-hand Fashion and Decora.

Will pixie haircuts be a new trend for the summer?

This month's Harper's Bazaar Magazine speculated that the pixie haircut may be a trend to emerge this summer. But how likely is it to happen? Michelle Williams recently cut her locks into this pixie do, as seen at the Indie Awards.

However, she has added hair extensions during the shoot of the film Incendiary in London but I think she really did pull off the pixie-cut look. The baton, for now will have to be passed to next-top-models, Agynes Deyn and Cecilia Mendez, two much-in-demand models who have a fan base. (Harper's Bazaar mentioned Agynes Deyn as a model creating buzz for this look) Actors and Performers lead trends more so than models now, compared to the the Supermodel era of the 1980's and 1990's and the person who popularized belly baring tops may get in on this possible trend also.

The site LaineyGossip.com has scoop that none other than Britney Spears is preparing for a photo shoot that features her clean cut new look. (You can see her new growth underneath the wig in the first photo) In any event, that's one photo editorial I'd like to see . Maybe she can pull it off – maybe as well as the others have since she is said to be tiny in person and is getting back into shape. A woman often critiqued for her fashion sense, and who likes faeries may be at the head of the pixie cut trend – if there is one. Only time will tell. But as the summer heats up, a cool hair style like this could be oh so freeing. (as usually the case, click on thumbs for full size pics)

Fashion Podcasts Available

ShopVogue.com, a site that lets you shop for the items seen on the pages of Vogue Magazine, offers fashion podcasts you can subscribe to. Check it out at this link.

FashionTelevision.com also offers podcasts for your viewing pleasure and passed the one million mark for the number of podcasts downloaded daily. I am working towards the official launch of this website and will offer more useful features and resources for those interested in fashion and style. One of those features is fashion news. The website is sort of “Alpha-ish phase” at the moment. However below is the press release for fashiontelevision.com’s podcasts.
