‘15 Minutes of Fame’ Redux: The MicroCelebrity and T-shirts

Posted by Sarah on 23rd January 2008

Myspace celebrities, Youtube celebs … Andy Warhol has never seemed more prescient than now, the age of the internet, when he made his statement that “in the future, everyone will be (world) famous for fifteen minutes”. Australian “Best Party Evah” kid has seemed to acquire this dubious sort of fame with his semblance and catch-phrase printed on a message T-shirt at BustedTees.com The 16-year old Aussie shirt-sunglasses kid threw a get-together that spiraled out of control and from there the rest is history…

“I’ll Say Sorry But I’m Not Taking Off My Glasses”

Message t-shirts australia

Of course you can have a fame of your own, at least among your circle of friends and family. At CafePress.com the public is able to have customized merchandise made like t-shirts, hoodies, hats, calenders, posters, print-on-demand books, audio and data Cds/DVDs and such. Many, many possibilities for products to sent to your circle … pictured, gifts, birth announcements, staying in touch etc.

They even offer an online shop to sell your creations to the general public. I think this is great idea because there are no upfront costs and it is an economical way for fashion students, struggling designers, or anyone who has a design idea to create a buzz for their product. As someone with ” no. budget. whatsoever. ” for any ventures, I see this as an amazing opportunity for new ideas to get noticed. You can also promote you business or charitable cause this way. Writers, artsists, musicians, whomever can just upload their idea or artwork, et voila! Cool.

Cameron Diaz’s Fashion Faux Pas

Posted by Sarah on 26th June 2007

While visiting Peru to participate in a Canadian television production about young leaders around the globe, Cameron Diaz inadvertently offended locals by carrying a bag with a red star and Mao Zedong’s political slogan “Serve the People” printed in Chinese.
As in the case of some celebrities who have had tattoos in languages they don’t understand and then subsequently the press reveals it is actually something they probably wouldn’t want inked into their skin - it’s best to be cautious wearing things printed in a language you don’t read.
From theglobeandmail.com
The bags are marketed as fashion accessories in some world capitals, but in Peru the slogan evokes memories of the Maoist Shining Path insurgency that fought the government in the 1980s and early 1990s in a bloody conflict that left nearly 70,000 people dead.
“I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it,” Diaz said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press.
“I’m sorry for any people’s pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country’s history,” she said.

Diaz also spoke of Peruvians’ beauty and warmth and said she wished “for their continued healing.”

Britney Spears’ fashion wild side…?

Posted by Sarah on 30th April 2007

Britney Spears has been opting for the edgy side of fashion lately. And when I saw her in this latest outfit, I had to say "what was she thinking?!!" The man’s hat, the red bra or bikini top underneath the see-through shift? The cowboy boots? Ripped fishnets?

But then I had to think again! Gwen Stefani has made poular the "Harajaku girls"  style of Japan to Westerners.  And Madonna pioneered her own original look in the 80’s - and pulled it off. Hordes of teens and young women dressed like her.  But Britney Spears is not pulling off this eclectic, who-cares-anyway look. Since erstwhile pal Madonna may not be available, perhaps Gwen Stefani and her Harajaku dancers can give her a few pointers on getting the feel of the look she is going for.
A Gothic-Burlesque-Western sort of look ?
